Portrait-led biography

About the artist

Claude Monet

Painter

I have always been drawn to the way light transforms the world around us. Much of my work begins with direct observation, returning to familiar landscapes at different times of day and in changing weather to explore shifts in colour, atmosphere and reflection.

My paintings are rooted in the landscapes that surround me, from the Seine and the Normandy coast to the gardens and water at Giverny. I often return to the same subjects again and again: trees, buildings, water, flowers and sky. What interests me is not simply the subject itself, but the fleeting moment in which it is seen.

Through painting, I try to capture something of that experience before the light changes and the moment disappears.
